Prior going to watch the movie, I heard that it was very gory and that it didn't get good reviews because it was bad... and that people shouldn't buy tix to go see it.
CHALLENGE ACCEPTED, CHALLENGE FINISHED.
T'WAS AMAZING!
At the beginning of the movie it starts off with the tale of Hansel and Gretel. Familiar enough. They get left out in the woods by their father, they see a gingerbread house, they eat the house, they walk into the house, they see a witch, they kill the witch in the oven. Almost like the original tale.
Except the witch was so fucking creepy, Hansel and Gretel are immune to the witches powers (which is kinda obvious that they must be witch children), and the candy that Hansel ate is poisonous and will kill him if he doesn't take frequent injections (evident after the opening sequence).
Jump to the opening sequence where Hansel is talking just before the opening credits start... and he is not talking in an accent. Actually neither him or his sister (and their "disciple") talked in an accent, which kinda threw me off a bit because everyone talked in an accent, but it wasn't that big of a deal.
ANYWAY, opening sequence was amazing. It continues the story of Hansel and Gretel and how they saved children at first from witches and how they grew up to become witch hunters (Oh joyful childhood, you died so young)! Amazing use of "newspaper articles" to continue the story within 1 or 2 minutes, and music&animations that kinda looked like it was part of Flyleaf's music videos... yes, sketches, lots of blood, and realistic looking fire, so the little artistic girl in me went like "OMG I'VE SEEN THIS STYLE SOMEWHERE BEFORE I LOVE IT."
Anyway, opening sequence finishes with them as fully grown adults. And the story continues and they finally realize what happened to their parents. That's all I'm gonna spoil you with as far as the plot goes.
I love how they kind of also had the use of "good witches" and village people burning girls/good witches for no reason and no real evidence that shows if they were witches (reminded me of the Salem witch trials).. but the scenes where they showed H&G's mother was kinda predictable that she was witch.
A few scenes creeped me out.
- The evil grand witch who looked pretty transformed into an ugly thing.
- The witches drinking a bowlful of the blood of children.
- The evil grand witch makes a guy eat worms and bugs ..and his stomach explodes...
- They find their old house.
All the bloody gruesome scenes i think had a fair amount of blood I think. Less than Django, but enough to make you sick.
A few Notable scenes.
- Gretel headbutts the town deputy so hard that his nose bleeds.
- Gretel bites him in the nose after getting captured for no reason and makes his nose bleed again.
- There was a troll named Edward who had big blue eyes and saved Gretel. He is the only Edward besides Edward Scissorhands that deserves my sympathy.
- Hansel gets into the pool naked with a girl. Notable because every time an actor has a scene with a girl in which he has to make out with her naked, i feel bad because it was probably hard... *badumtss* It looked like a hard scene to do, like what if the guy had a boner (in front of the camera, cast, and crew) in the middle of filming?
- Evil witches from around the world gathering for the blood moon. Notable because I recall Little Red telling me that there are many witches around the world who are all probably pagan.. I think...
- Gretel is the only one who can work her witchy powers but doesn't use them. Notable because I also recall Little Red telling me that every female has a witch in them. In fact I myself could also technically be a witch if I actually practiced being Wiccan.
- Their mother was actually good. Not like in the original fairytale.
- They find the creepy old gingerbread house. Hansel finds it first and goes "You gotta be fucking kidding me..." and then Gretel finds it after and goes "You gotta be fucking kidding me..." LOL
- Their future disciple asks them for an autograph and Hansel is all like OH nonono-- but Gretel was like OH YEAH SURE :D and then they open the book to sign when they see all of the news articles that involve them, LOL talk about crazy creepy and obsessive.
- Said disciple sees H&G behead a witch and almost has the urge to throw up... really funny because he said he was training to be a witch hunter like them.
Also really interesting how they combined fantasy and myth with religion.
Love how they twisted another children's classic. It makes big children like ME happy. :3 I enjoyed the story! It's not like most story-to-film movies where they kind of change the story altogether. They just continued the story.
Some things that could've been better were the accents. The swears I'm alright with, but it just sounds so modern day when they talk that you forget that it was set way back when, esp since everyone talked in an accent. If the whole cast didn't use accents, that would have worked too. Afterwards when it was just those two talking it was fine.
My favourite character was either Gretel because she was so tough and I like tough females, or Edward the troll because he has big blue wattery puppy eyes and he was just a big clumsy oaf with a good heart that you can't help but feel sorry for because even though he's big and strong he was always picked on by the evil witches to do their bidding... like kidnapping children. and he always had this really sad innocent looking puppy face every time he looked at Gretel ;__; AWEE!! Oh another notable scene was when Gretel gives him a pat on the chest signalling to him that he's doing a good job, he gives this really funny grin ^_^ so cute!
and when Edward gives Gretel a leaf bowl of water for her to drink and she refuses, he was like... "DRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINKKKKKK!" in a mean voice but then has puppy eyes after. x'DD AWWWEEE!!
I think I'll give this movie.... 8 out of 10. because i like fairy tales, i like fairy tales twisted, it was short and sweet (they didn't find the need to drag it out), little to enough gore and used it when necessary, special effects makeup was awesome, opening was my favourite part of the movie... and i think near the end, it kinda leaves an opening for a sequel.
~~~~~
I originally wanted to go see star trek: into darkness next because of how
action packed it was.. but this new trailer looked so sad that i didn't
wanna see it anymore :(
More movies to see are Oz (because i want to see the wizard, the wonderful wizard of oz), and Warm Bodies (because it looks funny, but apparently it's really scary)...
... and maybe Jack and the beanstalk because the actor who plays the main zombie in Warm Bodies is Jack.
